Leaving from Amalfi and following the tortuous coast to the west to arrive at Positano: Where the white houses, narrow roads and steep steps descend to the sea and terraces are arranged on the steep slopes of Monte Comuni and S. Angelo a Tre Pizzi. Boat excursions follow the coast to see the little beaches along the reef of rocks and the tall cliffs that rise up from a limpid sea. Relaxing sea trips to visit the Grotto "La Porta", the rock of Germano (also called Adenauer) and the small islands of Li Galli about 4 miles from the coast that are the home of many legends.
The oldest legends give these islands as the home of the Sirens who with their sweet singing tried to wreck the boat of Ulysses on the rocks. The interesting panorama brings to mind the cove of the Saracen and Turkish pirates who from these craggy island coasts raided and despoiled the towns on the coast. Apart from these legends Li Galli was for many years home to the Russian ballet dancer Leonide Massine. The complicated history of Positano has left very few tangible signs: The three towers (Torre Sponda, Torre Trasita, Torre del Fornillo) built by the Vice Re Pietro da Toledo as a defence system, The Villa Romana that lets one relive the fascination of Ancient Rome and the Church of S. Maria Assunta. A Church which had strong Roman connections that have nearly all been cancelled by the restorations starting from the eighteenth century, inside one can admire a Byzantine painted panel depicting the Madonna and Child, and a bas-relief on the Bell-tower that is one of the most beautiful works of medieval Italy.
The mild climate and the natural beauties, the picturesque houses on the green slopes of the mountains and the blue sea have made this happy town a popular meeting point for cosmopolitan tourism and artists from all over the world.
The town over the years has changed it's morphology with Hotels, characteristic restaurants and sporting facilities making Positano the famous tourist centre that it is today. A splendid town that also has an important place in the fashion industry with the production of a distinctive style known all over the world as the "Fashion of Positano".
